I decided to enjoy everything, the comfortable seat, the flight attendant’s smile, and everything I was experiencing because there was a chance it would all end at the airport.

At that time (2008), for the first time in my life, I had vacation and money at the same time, and I decided to travel outside of Brazil for the first time. With the help of a friend from work, I made a plan and decided to visit Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, and finally Paris. Someone advised me not to start with Paris to save the best for last. That trip represented many things for me. I felt victorious, happy, and free. I was living an incredible moment and threw myself beautifully into it all.

My fifteen-day vacation in Europe would start in Madrid. Before boarding in São Paulo, someone from the airline calls my name over the loudspeaker. They decided to put me in a business class seat despite buying an economy ticket. But wait, this is going to get even better. As soon as I found my seat on the plane, I was greeted by the flight attendant who would assist me during the flight. He was a very handsome, tall man who spent the entire flight serving me with that beautiful smile.

Everything seemed perfect, but I was looking forward to the arrival. Brazil and Spain were amid a diplomatic spat, with Spaniards being deported as they arrived at airports in Brazil and Brazilians facing the same in Spain.

I decided to enjoy everything, the comfortable seat, the flight attendant’s smile, and everything I was experiencing because there was a chance it would all end at the airport.

As soon as I entered the immigration queue, upon landing in Madrid, I remembered having read in a travel blog that it was not good to change lines so as not to raise suspicions in the people who approve our entry into the country.

The next line, the one I didn’t choose, flowed beautifully. People arrived at the counter, presented their passports, received a smile…
